  • Bend Designer: Amanda Lee of Aleefont

We are beyond excited to be able to feature some amazing creators here in our community of Bend, Oregon. This area is brimming with creative talent, and we’ve had the pleasure of being a part of it for fifteen years now! SEE MORE CREATORS HERE

Amanda Lee, owner and designer at Aleefont, is one of the Maker Women here that we’ve gotten to know in the past year—and we cannot get enough of what she does! Learn more about Amanda and Aleefont below…

Amanda Lee of Bend, OregonWe asked her a few questions this past week, and we want to share her life with you! We have no doubt that you’ll fall in love with her work like we did!

One thing you can’t live without:

    Coffee. Or my bike. It’s a toss-up.

    Favorite color:

    Zaffre Blue.

    Favorite TV show or movie:

It was short-lived on TV, but Pushing Daises was absolutely great, and I will watch the Daniel Craig 007 movies anytime.

    Favorite brands:

I love things that are well made with classic, minimal, and beautiful lines, or with a sense of humor (with a few vintage, antique, or handmade items mixed in). Kate Spade, Imogene + Willie, Hello! Lucky, Peg & Awl, Ariel Alasko, and Rifle Paper Co. are some of my inspirations.

    Favorite quote:

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Edmund Burke

    Edmund Burke quote

How long has Aleefont been going?

Aleefont has been in business for about a year and a half. September is our 2-year anniversary, although the products you see now have been available for about 6 months. It’s been a trial and error process to create the kind of product people really love.

What inspired you to start designing and printing?

I’ve always loved arts and crafts, ever since I was a child. As I became more aware of the different creative worlds out there, design was something that fascinated me because of its goal-oriented creative process. I enjoy the puzzle of figuring out what design elements are most appropriate for a client or a specific product, and translating that into a completed piece.

Letterpress printing was an obvious step for me because of my love for paper and ink. If you asked me what my favorite subject in school was, for years I went back and forth between Art, and Reading (not English – just reading). For me, Letterpress and printmaking are the perfect combination of books, paper, ink, design, art, creativity, and skill. It’s a challenge, but such a great mix of skills for me.

What are the pros and cons about your work, about owning your own business?

Pros: I love the control I have to define the aesthetics of a project (be it my own, or for a client), and then being involved in every part of the journey to produce that final creation. I set really high standards for myself when it comes to quality of work, and that makes it difficult at times in the process, but seeing the finished project look exactly right is deeply satisfying and fuels me for the next challenge.

Cons: The hardest part is having to maintain a pretty intense schedule to try and keep up. Doing the majority of the work myself is a challenge, and feels like I have to go 20 directions at once sometimes. Sorting out a better work-life balance is something I know will be a continual process.

What’s your favorite thing to create?

It’s hard to say. So much of what I do is a love for the process and lifestyle of creativity, and I really invest myself into everything I create. Some of the pieces that have been most meaningful to me are my personal mixed-media prints, and my new Snapshots of Bend card series.

When you’re not working, what are you doing?

I love cooking and eating tasty food, wandering around outside, biking & going for a run, or playing with my 4 year old cousin. Road trips and traveling are also really important to me. I absolutely love flying, and I’m trying to finish seeing all 50 States by the time I’m 25. I’ve done nearly 40 so far, so I’m close to finishing that goal.

What woman in your life has inspired you the most?

I am so blessed to have so many strong & inspiring women in my life that have truly followed their dreams. In the 1950’s and 60’s, my grandmothers both defied tradition and pursued their educations well beyond what the political systems allowed – Kathleen took science and Ham Radio classes despite the taboos, and met her husband there. Joan pursued her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, and supported her family after the early death of my Grandfather John from cancer. I am especially inspired by my 4 year old cousin Iris, who nurtures big dreams of entrepreneurship as an Ice Cream girl, and my cousin Kristi who pursued a career in Engineering, and now is a self-employed mom.

What’s the next big thing for you?

I’m really excited to releasing a new Bend, Oregon-themed card series called “Snapshots of Bend.” I’ve spent a lot of time creating the art and haikus for this series, connecting the ways we see water uniting our Central Oregon community.

I’m also thrilled that it’s giving Aleefont the opportunity to give back in a really important way. Through the sales of these new cards, we will be supporting local & international charities that promote conservancy & access to clean water. The new series will be available in my Etsy shop this Wednesday, April 1st (no joke!), and they will be on display at Atelier 6000, the printmaking studio & gallery here in town, throughout the month of April. Stop by the gallery for First Friday on April 4th, and I will be there demoing the Letterpress process!

  • Nashelle Wholesaler Feature: Silk & Burlap in Frederick, MD

Here at Nashelle, we get the chance to work with a huge variety of companies. The organizations we donate to, the groups that we collaborate with, and the shops and boutiques that carry our handmade jewelry. Every month, we like to take a look at the fantastic boutiques that we send jewelry to on a regular basis. Read about more of our wholesalers.

Today’s feature is all about Silk & Burlap—a cute little shop out of Frederick, Maryland that sells a great selection of women’s clothing, home décor, and of course… Nashelle! For the past three years, we have been honored to be a part of the Silk & Burlap inventory—and we’re looking forward to many more years.

    Silk & Burlap

Saule and Angelique, the founders of Silk & Burlap, opened this store in 2009—after being introduced to each other by their daughters! This was the start of a great friendship and a truly wonderful store. After a glass of wine and some vision-sharing, Saule and Angelique made a decision—they would open a boutique right there in Frederick. Three years after their inception, we were honored to become a part of their beautiful shop.

    Silk & Burlap Style

One of the things we love most about Silk & Burlap is their perfect style! We’ve spent many a Saturday afternoon perusing their Instagram profile for outfit ideas and inspiration! The ladies that buy the styles, decorate the store and put together these pictures know exactly what we’re looking for—when it comes to home décor AND weekend outfits.

Here are a few of our favorites from the @silknburlap profile...

    Silk & Burlap and Nashelle!

We have always loved the pieces that Silk & Burlap orders for their store… but never more so than when they ordered their special PIZZA and UNICORN necklaces. Yes, you read that right. We are SO in love!

    Silk n Burlap

In addition to our bar necklaces, Silk & Burlap also has a lot of Identity from Nashelle – our hand stamped necklaces, bracelets and more!

It’s been such an honor working with you guys, Silk & Burlap! We’re looking forward to many more years of working with your wonderful store!

    xoxo, the Nashelle team

  • Bend Creator: Madison Hartley of A Native Bloom

It’s a month all about women, and we are beyond excited to be able to feature some amazing women creators here in our community of Bend, Oregon. This area is brimming with creative talent, and we’ve had the pleasure of being a part of it for fifteen years now!

Madison Hartley, owner and designer at A Native Bloom, is one of the Maker Women here that we simply adore. We’re constantly drooling over her instagram, and we love seeing the collaborations and workshops she does in the area!

We asked her a few questions this past week, and we want to share her life with you! We have no doubt that you’ll fall in love with her work like we did!

One thing you can’t live without:

    Carrot juice & Instagram

    Favorite color:

    A deep dark purple.

    Favorite TV show or movie:

    Broad City, The Graduate

    Favorite brands:

I really try to invest in quality pieces that are independently designed and fairly produced. Some of my favorite designers are Elizabeth Suann, Osei-Duro, Ace & Jig and Lauren Winter Co.

    Favorite quote:

“When someone shows you who they are believe them; the first time.” - Maya Angelou

When someone shows you who they are, believe them; the first time.

How long has A Native Bloom been going?

    One year in January.

What inspired you to start arranging?

I worked for a florist in college while I was studying painting. It wasn't till a few years after graduating that I revisited the works of the Dutch Masters from the 16th century. The flowers they painted had such depth and life. At some point I made the connection that this is the way flowers are supposed to move, even inside a vase.

What are the pros and cons about your work, about owning your own business?

Pros would definitely be flexibility, creativity, and freedom. I love collaborating with others to put together creative projects. Editorial styling is something I'm getting much more interested in.

Cons would be the constant battle to not take everything personally. Often it's hard to separate myself from my brand since myself as a designer and artist is so connected to everything I do. It's a learning process but each day I think I’m getting better. Now, I’m at the point where I’m learning to say no to things that aren't the direction I want to head with my flowers. Scary but liberating.

What’s your favorite kind of flower to work with?

Besides heirloom garden roses (Which are available almost year round.) I love working with what is most seasonably fresh that week. A lot of my time is spent researching flowers varieties and unique foliage. I'm more connected to the changing of the seasons than ever before. I know what it means for the flower market when the temperature goes up ten degrees.

When you’re not working, what are you doing?

Is this a trick question? Because my weeks and months are planned out so far in advance, in my free time I’m usually planning blitz trips to the coast, red wood groves, or Portland. The Pacific Northwest has an endless supply of weekend trips!

Madison, thank you so much for sharing your life with us! We love everything you do, and we’re excited to see what’s coming up on the horizon for you!

Keep connected with A Native Bloom by visiting her website, or by following her on Facebook and Instagram!

    Blessings and love, xo!

  • Heather's Nashelle Feature on MyWindow

Anti-Bullying has long been a subject close to the heart of our founder, Heather Nashelle. Every child experiences the pain of bullying in one form or another: at home, at school, being left out, being the last chosen, cyber-bullying and so much more. Sometimes, it's so subtle that we don't even see it, and sometimes we see it too late.

No child should ever have to go through the pain of bullying, and Nashelle's owner Heather knows that personally, as she's seen it happen through the eyes of her children.

That's why this cause is so close to our hearts here at Nashelle, and that's what lead to Heather touring Central Oregon, speaking in classrooms, assemblies, parties and more - talking about bullying, as well as kindness.

The below feature from Central Oregon's MyWindow talks a little more about exactly what happens during these talks and classes with Heather!

  • Be the Change Jewelry

We have been blessed in many ways here at Nashelle, and we are so blessed to be able to give back to organizations that inspire us. From the Farley Project to Feeding America, we’ve been able to meet amazing leaders, talk with the innovators behind some truly exciting movements, and see the results of people coming together for a cause.

One way that we give back is through our Be the Change jewelry—our Be the Change Ring and Be the Change Necklace. 50% of the net proceeds of these pieces goes back to Food for the Hungry’s work supporting female entrepreneurs all over the world!
